Asbestos is the biggest workplace killer in New Zealand. Worldwide deaths from asbestos-related diseases are estimated to be between 107,000 and over 255,000 annually, depending on the source and the diseases included. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that occupational exposure alone causes over 200,000 deaths each year, which represents more than 70% of work-related cancer deaths. These estimates are considered to be underestimates due to under-diagnosis and under-reporting
